How in a technologically advanced society are average people to earn a living? For more than two decades, the Kelso Institute has provided a forum in San Francisco to seek an answer to this question. Today, with automation and robotisation gaining pace and in the light of the climate crisis we are confronted with ever more pressing challenges inextricably linked with this query. Pivotal in this context are the energy and digital twin transitions, the trajectory to a climate neutral circular society but also the future of democracy in the age of the internet. To reply to these challenges we need fresh minds, creative ideas and awareness among – above all – young people yet in their education.
In this light it is the endeavour of the Kelso Institute Europe to facilitate both a sustainable Energy Transition including Consumer Co-Ownership in Renewables, and to further broaden Employee Financial Participation. The work program, therefore, lie on questions of ownership and privatisation, insolvency and restructuring, digitisation and ICT, and financial crises and their impact on the Welfare State.
The KIE employs a multinational team networking all over the globe. We combine the disciplines of law, engineering, behavioural economics, and econometrics, including perspectives of psychology and philosophy. Our operations are organised in three research areas with one respective coordinator each:
Legal Affairs & Energy Law
Renewable Energy and Stakeholder Engagement
Energy Economics and Quantitative Research
The Patricia and Louis Kelso Fellowships are awarded to outstanding scholars studying topics of the energy transition, consumer and employee financial participation, sustainability or the development of a “circular society” in Europe and worldwide.
Research Fellows are global scholars that are invited to become part of the Institute’s ongoing research and academic conferences because of their scholarship and experience. Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral scholars, or visiting professors in the areas of law, philosophy, renewables/engineering, business/economics, history, political science, psychology, public policy, or sociology may apply. There is no stipend associated with the fellowship but we offer in house accommodation and a travel / subsistence reimbursement.
As we give a preference to supporting junior scholars we expressly encourage young people to apply. The expectation is that they stay 1-3 months as a researcher in residence at the KIE in Berlin, Germany and cooperate in joint publications and research activities with its staff.
Deadlines are usually 1 March and 1 November each year.
Next call: 1 March 2024
Applicants must submit the following information in writing by the deadline for applications for the fellowships:
A statement of no more than 1,500 words describing their proposed research project including its current status and broader significance;
A curriculum vitae;
Three letters of reference (included in sealed envelopes or submitted separately by email to contact(at)kelso-institute-europe.de);
A preliminary budget if the request includes covering travel expenses.
